Introduction

Web.com offers a low-cost, very powerful tool for creating your own sophisticated website with photos, audio files and video.  All completely wizard driven menus that do not require any HTML programming experience at all!

You can:

  • Create your own webpage (or multiple pages)
  • Get your own domain, e.g. ralphbond.com in my case
  • Get your own email yourname@yourdomain.com
  • Use wizards and templates to select and populate a very attractive website
  • Enhance your website with photos, audio clips and videos
  • Instantly create a blog, with a super simple update tool
  • Build in a "contact me" or response email tool
  • For a small business, add PayPal option
  • Get statistics on visits to your website

This service is ideally suited for a small business, or, as I discovered, as a great way to illustrate your background if you are job hunting.   So much more powerful than just a paper resume.  I've created multiple websites using the base under $10 a month package!

Slide 1 - the Three Plans

After setting up my account and determining that the domain name of ralphbond.com was available, I selected the $9.95 per month basic package.

Note: You will create a password to ensure that only you will access your account and create/edit your website, or access email.

This base package is a great place to start.  You get the domain name, email, multiple websites and up to 5 gigs of storage for any multimedia items.

For small businesses, you can also add PayPal capabilities

Slide 2 - Getting Started building your website

The first step is to pick a website template.  The web.com service offers an amazing array of templates by category and theme, such as business, family, contractor, or personal (individual).

To illustrate how easy it is to set up a website I decided to create a general family news site.  Slide 2 shows the screen for giving the new site a name, adding a footer that will appear on each page, and selecting from a stack list of sub-pages that will appear in the navigation bar/area of your new site.   Note the checked categories such as "About Us", "Latest News" and "Photo Gallery".

When you are ready, all you have to do is click the "Continue" link at the bottom of the page.

Slide 3 - Selecting a Template/Design for your Website

You can go with the default suggested template, or choose from hundreds of designs.   Note the design groups such as Art & Architecture, Business & Professional, Charity & Volunteer, etc.

Slide 4 - Lots of templates to explore

The web.com service provides a huge library of templates to explore.  The navigation is super easy to understand.  I recommend you bounce around till you find a template that feels right to you.

Slide 5 - Seeing your template come alive with your page entries

Once you select a design, and click "Continue" you'll see the template filled with the sub-pages in the navigation area.  Beside each page element you'll see a small box you may click to edit the element.  For example, clicking the "Edit site title" box next to the "Family Website" element would allow me, for example, to change the text to "Bond Family Website".   It's that easy for all the text elements.

Slide 6 - The Toolbar at the bottom of the website

Populating a set template with your own text and images is what most free services limit you to (such as AOL's website builder).  Fee-based services take things to a much more flexible level.  Note the toolbar at the bottom of the screen and all the tools, such as "Add Text", "Add Picture", "Add Link", etc.

This is where all the power and fun of the website builder kicks into gear.  There's so much going on here I could write a book chapter on the toolbar capabilities on their own right.  So, to illustrate how easy and wizard driven the builder utility is, let's use adding a photo as an example.  In Slide 7 and beyond I'll show you how to add a picture to your site.

Slide 7 - Adding a Picture to Your Site

In the toolbar at the bottom of the screen you click the "Add Picture" icon.  Doing so causes your webpage to be displayed again, this time with "Add it here" boxes placed throughout the page in question.  All you have to do is click on the box in the location where you want the added photo to appear on the web page.  I'm going to click on the box just below the "Welcome" graphic image.

Slide 8 - Selecting or Uploading a photo to a gallery

After you decide where you want your photo to be placed, and you've clicked the "Add it here" box, the screen refreshes to show the "My Pictures" gallery.  Here you can upload a digital image from your PC to a standard gallery, or create your own galleries to populate with photos.  For this exercise, I'm selecting the old "PC Dads" photo of me and Mark Ivey in our safari outfits (it's the photo on the far right).  I put a check mark to select the photo, then click the "Choose pictures" button.  Next, see below, a screen appears allowing me to format the selected photo.

Slide 9 - Format the selected photo to be added to your web page

The formatting step allows me to determine the display size of the image, alignment, caption or footer text and a decorative frame for the image.

Slide 10 - Making the Image "clickable"

I can also set it up so that when you click the image you see it displayed in its original size, or, the image can point to another page on my website, or to another website (create a link).

Slide 11 - Seeing the final result of the add photo routine

When you've determined all the settings for the image you click "Done" and bingo you'll see your page with the photo inserted.

The same super simple series of controlled steps apply to adding audio clips, video clips, tables, links, etc.  And wizards make moving, copying and deleting items equally easy to do.

Slide 12 - Publishing and viewing

When you've finished all your editing and adding of photos, etc., you click the "Publish to Web" icon in the toolbar.  You'll see a screen showing what the URL will be for the new website (in this case, www.ralphbond.com/familywebsite).  Click the "Publish now" yellow box and in a few minutes your live website is posted on the server and ready for access.  Slide 12 shows my test website as it would be viewed by anyone on the web.

Now it's time for more fun!  Using the service online builder utility you can add pages, audio, video, you name it.

Slide 13 - Changing design colors, textures, etc.

If you like a template but don't like the colors, textures, etc., no problem!  Handy wizards will walk you through the process of modifying backgrounds, text colors, you name it!  You can even use your own photos as wallpaper.  Note in slide 13 the change commands.
